Student News Competition
Rules and Regulations
Eligibility
Any newscast or individual report produced and aired between December 15, 2006 and December 5, 2007 is eligible. Shows or reports for which faculty or professionals played more than a supervisory role will not be judged. Stories completed during internships are not eligible, unless shot, written, voiced, and edited by students.
Graduate students without professional experience in broadcast journalism are welcome to compete in the student category. Graduate students with professional newsroom experience must enter the faculty competition. There is no limitation regarding the size of audience, frequency of broadcast, or method of dissemination. Each college or university is limited to one TV entry and one radio entry in the newscast category. Individuals may enter each category, but are limited to one entry per category. Schools entering the TV newscast competition must be BEA Institutional Members to qualify. All individual entrants must be BEA (Student) Individual Members or their school must be a BEA Institutional Member. Please check the BEA website, www.beaweb.org , for individual membership forms and Institutional Member information.
Length
Newscast entries should run between five and 30 minutes. Include a rundown with your entry and specify show’s schedule (ex., weekly, daily, M-W-F, Mon-Thurs., etc.). Reminder: The newscast entry fee is $35.
Individual reporting entries should run between 1:00-5:00. Include a complete script (anchor lead, reporter track, soundbite transcriptions) with these entries. Individual TV talent entries should be no longer than 5:00 . The entry should be a single newscast NOT a montage of several newscasts. Include a brief description of the type newscast (daily, weekly, twice-weekly, etc.). The reporting and talent entry fee is $25. (One fee for each report or talent entry).
Each winning entry receives two award plaques at BEA expense. The first goes to the winner and the second to the winner’s institution. Additional plaques may be ordered after the convention.
Payment
Make any and all checks payable to BEA. It is not necessary to include individual checks for each entry. Instead, a combined check can be sent for an entire set of entries from one school. Do not send checks to the contest chairs; send them to:

Entry Formats
All TV entries must be on individual VHS tapes (one entry per tape) or nonprogressive DVD (one entry per disk), clearly marked with student name, school name, entry category and include a slug which appears on the tape as well as on any box or sleeve the tape is in. Tapes will not be returned.
All Radio entries must be on CD-R, in either MP3, .cdda, .aif, or comparable format. One CD-R per entry. Entries must be clearly marked with student name, school name, entry category and include a slug which appears on the CD as well as on the case. CD's will not be returned.
Deadlines
Entries must be received by December 7, 2007. Incomplete or inaccurate entries will not be judged, and refunds will not be made in these cases.
